tricount alternative · august 2026
tricount is good. it still needs a person to open tricount.
count keeps the part that works — a share link, no accounts, no price — and removes the part that breaks: a human typing $12.40 into a form at the checkout.
the expense is recorded by the agent you already had open. your flatmates get the same no-signup link they get today.
01 · the one difference
the ledger is only as true as the least diligent person in it.
tricount asked less of your friends than splitwise ever did, and that was the right instinct. but every expense still costs somebody an app, a screen and four fields, at the worst possible moment: while paying.
so the internet bill lives in a memory, then in a notes file, then in a conversation in august about march. count does not fix that with reminders. it removes the form.
02 · recording one expense
five taps at the checkout, or one sentence afterwards.
- 01install tricount, or open the web app
- 02find the right tricount
- 03tap add expense
- 04type what, how much, who paid, and check the split
- 05do that again at the next checkout, or forget and reconstruct it in august
- 01say what you paid for, to the agent already open
I paid $184.20 for groceries, split three ways
add_expense
recorded. maya owes you $61.40. theo owes you $61.40.
the balance arrives in the sentence. nothing was typed into a form.

where tricount is the right answer
if nobody in the group uses an ai agent, tricount is the better tool today and its share link is the thing count copied. count only wins when one person in the count already has claude, chatgpt or cursor open all day — because that one person can then keep the ledger true for everyone else.
04 · questions
can I use count without an agent
yes. every count has a share link that opens a plain web ledger, and you can add an expense there in two fields. the agent is the fast path, not the only one.
do the other people in my count need anything
no. they open the link, tap which member they are once, and see the balances. no signup, no download, no email. exactly the part of tricount that was right.
what happens when someone pays me back
you or your agent record a settle. the ledger keeps the line in graphite rather than deleting it, and the balances redraw. count never moves money, and it links out to venmo or revolut instead.
can I get my data out
yes, csv from any count page, free. that matters here: export was one of the things tricount removed when premium was deprecated.
how do I move a tricount to count
today, by hand or by telling your agent the expenses that still matter. most people only carry the open balances across, which is one sentence. import is on the list, and the docs list what the tools do now rather than what is planned.
what does count send me
one email a week, the sunday count: one line per member, who owes whom. that is the only outbound message. no notifications, no badges.
the one thing you will ever touch
one url. pasted once. by one person.
